How to Actually Prevent Razor Bumps and Ingrown Hairs

Razor bumps aren't bad luck and they're not a skin type you're stuck with. They're almost always the result of specific, fixable technique problems - and once you know what causes them, preventing them becomes straightforward.

The bump itself forms when a hair that's been cut at a sharp angle - which is what every razor does - curls back and re-enters the skin instead of growing outward. This happens more often when the hair is coarse or curly, when the skin is irritated, and when the hair has been cut especially close. The coarser and curlier the hair, the tighter it curves when it grows, which is why razor bumps are more common for some people than others. That's not a defect, just a textural reality that calls for adjusted technique.

Prep matters more than people give it credit for. Shaving on dry or unprepared skin means the hair is stiff and the skin is less pliable - a sharp blade still cuts cleanly, but the disruption is greater. Shaving after a shower, or applying a warm towel to the area for a couple of minutes, softens the hair and opens the follicle slightly. The blade moves with less resistance and the hair sits in a better position to be cut.

Technique is where most of the damage happens. Shaving against the grain gets a closer result, but it cuts the hair below the surface of the skin and dramatically increases the chance of ingrowth. With the grain - meaning in the direction the hair grows - is the standard starting point. One clean pass is better than three lighter ones. Multi-pass shaving chases the last bit of closeness but accumulates irritation with every stroke, and irritated skin is more prone to bumps.

A dull blade is probably the single most common cause. A sharp blade cuts cleanly in one motion; a dull one drags, which pulls the hair before cutting it and leaves a more jagged end. Most people use a blade two to three times too many.

Aftercare is simple: something to calm the skin without clogging it. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free. The skin just needs to settle.

The fix isn't a product - it's doing less, not more, and doing it in the right direction.
